Veneers consist of a thin layer of porcelain placed over the tooth’s surface to improve the tooth’s appearance.
Veneers are the primary, conservative approach for cosmetic tooth improvement. They’re used to cover up or fill in:
Veneer treatments usually take three appointments, as follows:
At your consultation, you discuss your goals for treatment with Dr. Azer. She examines your teeth to make sure veneers are appropriate and explains the process and expectations with you. She also takes X-rays and impressions of your teeth.
At this appointment, Dr. Azer removes enamel from the tooth’s surface to make room for the veneers. She then takes impressions of the treated teeth to send to the lab. The lab develops your veneers and sends them back within 2-4 weeks. If necessary, Dr. Azer can place temporary veneers on your teeth in the meantime.
Once the veneers are ready, Dr. Azer assesses them for proper fit before permanently applying them. She can also trim and adjust the color of the veneers until they’re perfect. Dr. Azer then cleans and prepares your tooth’s surface, before attaching the veneers with dental cement. Finally, she uses a special light beam to cure the cement, and give the veneers any final adjustments.
Veneers are irreversible and irreparable, so it’s important to care for them properly. Dr. Azer recommends that you don’t bite down on hard objects like your nails, ice, or pencils. It’s also important to avoid grinding or clenching your teeth because that can damage veneers as well.
You can brush and floss around your veneers like normal. Teeth with veneers are nonresistant to decay, so proper oral hygiene is necessary.
Veneers need to be replaced approximately every 7-15 years. With the proper care, you can help prolong their lifespan.
